Lent: A Journey to Transformation
Before we begin…
Growing up I was taught Lent is a season of sacrifice, reflection, and spiritual renewal. For us, it was about not eating meat on Fridays, cutting back on small pleasures, and attending Palm Sunday, knowing what it represents. But it’s now —50 years later— that I finally understand that it’s much, much deeper. Today, I understand that Lent is a 40-day journey challenging us to become better, it’s a journey of humility, discipline, spiritual growth and ultimately…transformation.
Let’s Talk Leadership!
Lent is much deeper than sacrifice and reflection. It’s a pathway to transformation. It’s about a different perspective rooted in humility, discipline, and personal growth in a world where leadership is seen as power and results.
Lent is about intentionality. The practice of fasting, prayer, and self-examination encourages us to pause and evaluate what truly matters. In leadership, this valuable exercise calls us to step back, reassess our motivations, and realign our actions with values. Too often, leadership easily becomes reactive and driven by urgency rather than purpose. Lent interrupts that cycle with intentional reflection that strengthens personal integrity and organizational clarity.
Discipline and Lent
One of the most powerful lessons of Lent is the discipline of letting go. Whether it’s fasting from food, habits, or distractions, the act symbolizes making space for something greater. As leaders, we apply this by letting go of ego, control, or the need for constant recognition. Effective leadership is about creating space for others to grow— instead of holding on to authority. When you let go of the need to dominate every decision, you empower those around you, foster trust, and cultivate collaboration.
Another essential aspect of Lent is sacrifice. Sacrifice is often associated with loss, but in leadership, it leads to gain—specifically, the gain of trust and credibility. Sacrificing personal comfort for the well-being of others demonstrates authenticity. For example, making decisions that benefit the group or taking time to mentor others are acts of sacrifice that may not always be visible, but leave a lasting impact.
Resilience and Lent
Lent is also a season of resilience. The 40-day journey is not meant to be easy. It requires commitment and perseverance. The ability to remain steady during uncertainty and lead with hope when circumstances are difficult, is what distinguishes great leadership. Lent teaches that endurance is built through daily discipline and small, consistent, actions that shape character over time.
Faith and Lent
Faith plays a central role in Lent and it becomes a guiding force that guides us by principles rather than fear. Leading with faith means trusting the process, even when outcomes are unclear. Faith-centered leadership is courageous, it emphasizes service, compassion, and purpose. It reminds us that influence is about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Renewal and Lent
Lent highlights the importance of renewal. The season does not end in sacrifice but in restoration and hope. In leadership, this is a powerful reminder that growth often requires periods of challenge and reflection. Renewal is not automatic—it takes effort. With this cycle of reflection and renewal, we are better equipped to adapt, innovate, and inspire.
In a fast-paced world that rewards constant output, Lent offers a countercultural message: slow down, reflect, and grow. This season is powerful for lasting change— in how you lead —and in who you become.
May your journey be a transformational one!
